Born in Barcelona, studied Graphic Design and Photography at the Eina School of Design and graduated in Theory of Contemporary Arts at the Universitat Autònoma of Barcelona. From 1972 to 1979 worked as a freelance press photographer (Diari de Barcelona, Mundo, Triunfo, Cambio 16, Interview). In 1979, Josep aimed his professional activity at filmmaking. He’s been working as Director of Photography since 1986 on productions of all types in film, TV, commercials and documentaries.
Josep started working internationally with well-known directors such as Bigas Luna, Monte Hellmann, Daniel Calparsoro, Agustí Villaronga, Brian de Palma, Keith English, Adrian Noble, Andi Baiz, Guillermo Navarro, Denis Rovira among others. He combines his passion for feature films with his work in commercials and documentaries.
Josep won two Gaudí Awards of the Catalan Academy of Cinema for Best Cinematography for the feature films ‘Incerta Glòria’ (2018) and ‘The King of Havana’ (2016), both directed by Agustí Villaronga. He was nominated at Goya Awards for Best Cinematography in 2016 for ‘The King of Havana’ and in Camerimage 2004 for ‘Guerreros’ directed by Daniel Calparsoro. Recently he won Best Cinematography at Málaga Film Festival 2021 for his work in ‘The Belly of the Sea’.
In line with each director’s vision, Josep always weaves a sense of emotion in his images.
